Your Style Expressed: Home, Business, On the Street

There's an evolution of personal style that occurs as soon as we become mothers. Inspiration, strength, and happiness is derived from a deeper place within us.  I think our creative mojo is kicked into high gear, from dressing ourselves to juggling increasingly hectic schedules.

So why not showcase the creative talents of Moms with Estilo (style), who express their personal style on the streets, in their homes and in the business world? This group of moms definitely "wowed" me!

The Pouffe
Ever heard of the Pouffe? Check out www.redzipperdesigns.com
A pair of West coast mamas had the ingenious idea to upgrade the bean bag from it's tired old state to a "storage bean-bag" and gave us a stylish way to add more storage to our homes. Recently launched in May, these mamas are hitting it out of the ball park with their creative RedZipper design.  Go Mamas!

But wait! As ingenious as a business idea is, so is finding a special way to showcase your personal style at home and bring together the pieces of your past to make them part of your present.

Much More Than A Wedding Runner
This East coast mama worked on her wedding runner for a week, painstakingly gluing synthetic flower petals to it by hand. So where is this 5 ft runner now? It's hanging beautifully in her daughter's room. A love story to be shared and for all to see. Where a happy couple once stood and vowed to love each other, now their little girl plays and can add to it's history.

Show Me Those Hands!
I actually stopped and did a double take when I saw the detail on this mama's finger nails. But it's not just the detail, it's the color combinations she chose to use that really showcase her personal style. While her toddler naps, her creative juices get to work. Using different paint brush sizes, this mom paints really hip designs on her nails and saves herself the expensive mani/pedi tab.

Creative Wall Decor
Ever walk into someone's home and see something so different yet cool, you just have to ask if it's a personal creation? Well, that's exactly what I did when I noticed the wall decor in this mom's living room and then again in a different version in her son's room.

Wall Art
Way to express your personal style! This mom's fun and modern wall art really adds something special to her son's room. Using multi color tape found in the school supply section at Target, she creates a segway between the window curtains at one end of the room and the storage pieces at the other end, tying the elements in this room nicely.

That's it for this first monthly installment of Your Style Expressed.

Who's Your Style Icon?

My Style Icon

Actually, I never thought about it until I decided to start a blog for Moms with Estilo (style). So why a blog for moms with style and not  fashionable moms

There's actually a big difference between "fashion" and "style".

An article I read by Greg Thompson puts it clearly.
"Fashion is about clothes and their relationship to the moment in time they’re being presented in. Style is about you and your relationship to yourself. Fashion is in the clothes. Style is in the wearer."

And that's when I realized my Mother is my style Icon. There is no one I have carefully scrutinized or followed more closely than my mother (pictured above). A true lady and warrior princess in my mind, she always dresses the part.

From the fragrance that follows her and immediately permeates a room, to the outfits, and larger than life jewelry she wears. Her personal style never ceases to draw attention. The unafraid confidence my mother has portrayed throughout her life has truly impacted my own style throughout the years.

Hair: The Bun is Back!

Yes! The BUN is back for this Fall 2012 Season

Everywhere I look, women (especially Mom's with style) are making fashion statements with the messy bun. It lies high on your head and is imperfect, playful and chic.

Personally, the bun has been a life saver for me. With two kids under the age of 5, washing my hair everyday just isn't a reality. I have curly long hair with lots of volume. This is not practical in the West coast heat or when your out on play dates or simply trying to get to work in the morning. So I started to put it up in a bun just to get it out of the way.

But the Fall 2012 Bun is a breath of fresh air as I was starting to feel like maybe the bun was aging me instead of saving me.  Like all moms, I'm looking for versatility and the bun has stepped out of the closet with it in spades. Dress it up or down....

Do's & Don'ts:

Do place the bun high on your head
Do even it out with the size of your head
Do use a texturizing product if your hair is clean (stylist.com)
Do use a flexible hairspray if you hair is not freshly shampooed (stylist.com)

Don't fuss over it. It should be fun & playful.
Don't wear a flat, plastered bun

Splash!....and there she goes

Ever fallen accidentally into a pool at a party? What about a 5 year old kiddy party?
Well, I did. Yesterday...YUP! You heard right. Now most people (women) would freak out, especially if you take the time to look good and pick just the right outfit.

Because even though it's just a kiddy party, any opportunity to look good is a good one.

But, I decided to change and snap photos for you instead ..... in a pair of red basketball men's shorts and purple t-shirt while my cloths dried. LOL!

I hate to admit it, but I'm into animated characters as much as my boys. Needless to say, they get a kick out of watching me wear it. It's fun for them and me to sport this style and we share a common interest.
